Living with HIV

HIV care at Central City Medical Centre Perth

A recent study published in The Lancet shows that, thanks to the emergence of current convenient, non-toxic antiretrovirals, life expectancy for those with HIV in developed countries is now close to those without the infection. The study concludes that closing the gap that remains is not going to be brought about by the emergence of new HIV drugs but rather by treating other chronic diseases such as blood pressure and diabetes. HIV carriers are just as likely to suffer from these as everyone else but traditionally have not concentrated on optimally treating them as the focus has been very much on the HIV. Here at CCMC, Prof Kuteyi and Dr Mahon are both s100 HIV community prescribers which means that they are able to both manage your HIV but, also as GPs, are best placed to manage your general health.
